Project Description
PAYING ARTIST OPPORTUNITIES
Writers
Writers are welcome to submit for Melanated Mondays, our PAYING monthly variety show that showcases new works written and performed by Black creatives. This is the best way to get started with BRTW and get recommended for additional writing opportunities. Every fall, we also accept applications for Revolution NOW, our paying new play development fellowship.
Actors
Actors are also welcomed to audition for Melanated Mondays, which is the best way to get recommended for additional projects- including our commissioned performances and work for the Black Revolutionary Media podcast.
FREE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Writers Block
Writers Block is a FREE bi-monthly write-in that offers MFA-inspired creative writing techniques and exercises for Black writers. Writers Block will return in early Spring 2022. Learn more and sign up below.
Community Workshops
We also regularly offer community workshops that activate our organizing power to serve Black communities. Stay tuned for the next workshop.
A HOME FOR ARTISTS OF COLOR
Even as opportunities grow for women and people of color in entertainment, employment opportunities in a notoriously underpaying industry still skew heavily white and male. Even as the median income for NYC’s actors is often reported around $50,000, the fact of the matter is that many actors- especially women and PoCs- are expected to work for little to no money and pay exorbitant taxes on that income as freelancers. BRTW recognizes that the needs of creatives of color requires dedicated advocacy and support, and we hope to provide a home for artists of color in the near future. As we grow, BRTW’s producing team is committed to expanding BRTW’s membership and creating opportunities to onboard emerging artists of color on our administrative and creative teams. Our vision for sustainability includes paid incubators to foster emerging artists and administrator’s professional experience in addition to providing content with full casts of color helmed by writers and directors of color.
A VISION OF SUSTAINABILITY
Black Revolutionary Theatre Workshop is spending the next several months expanding its network, onboarding new members, and building its advisory board to create a plan for sustainability. In 2022, we look forward to taking vital steps forward to create sustainable employment opportunities for artists of color, place more workshops and performance pieces in educational institutions, and opening our workshops and performances to more audiences in NYC.
SUPPORT BRTW TODAY
BRTW exists to investigate, interrogate, and change the status quo as it marginalizes Black people worldwide. With economic, social, educational, healthcare, housing, and political injustice facing our community, BRTW aims to tackle the issues that impact us while becoming a beacon for Black opportunity within the arts.
